Your chain is the critical link between engine and wheel. Learn how to keep it in perfect condition with this comprehensive maintenance guide.

A well-maintained chain can last 30,000 km or more. A neglected one might not make it past 10,000. Here is everything you need to know about keeping your chain happy. ## Why Chain Maintenance Matters Your chain transfers all that power from engine to wheel. A worn or poorly lubricated chain: - Reduces fuel efficiency - Wears sprockets faster - Can snap unexpectedly - Affects handling ## How Often? - Clean and lube: Every 500-800 km - Adjustment check: Every 1,000 km - Deep clean: Every 3,000 km - Replacement: Check wear indicators ## The Cleaning Process ### Step 1: Preparation Put the bike on a center stand or paddock stand. You need the rear wheel to spin freely. ### Step 2: Cleaning Use a dedicated chain cleaner or kerosene. Never use WD-40 as your only cleaner - it can damage O-rings. Apply cleaner, let sit for 5 minutes, scrub with a soft brush. ### Step 3: Rinse and Dry Wipe thoroughly with clean rags. Let dry completely. ### Step 4: Lubrication Apply chain lube to the inside of the chain while slowly rotating the wheel. Let it penetrate the O-rings for 10 minutes before riding. ## Pro Tips - Always clean and lube after riding in rain - Check tension when the chain is warm - Replace sprockets when you replace the chain
